Kludget Engine version 1.0 has arrived

After a little more than a year of kludging, the engine has reached the stable version release – 1.0.
It is now running on top of Qt 4.7 framework. With several internals of the engine updated, it is a lot more stable now. And the performance has greatly improved.

I’m contemplating of changing the direction of the Kludget Engine to be more of a comprehensive desktop and shell enhancement instead of just a Widget/Gadget engine. Or maybe just fork a new project out of it. But for now, enjoy v1.0.0

Kludget Engine for Ubuntu

Ubuntu version of Kludget Engine is here. Run those shiny Apple Dashboard Widgets on Linux now.

This is built and tested on Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04).

Running on Ubuntu 9.04

Instructions

Extract the file kludget..tar.gz
Open Kludgets application

Kludgets Logo

The guys from www.minimamente.com were kind enough to contribute this logo for Kludgets.

I’m not sure yet if this would infringe Apple’s Dashboard logo as it obviously looks similar. So this logo won’t be official yet.

For now this is the logo that would be used in the engine. Looks pretty nice too don’t you think? From: mattahan.deviantart.com

The author hasn’t replied to my email yet. So this isn’t official as well. But this logo is under Creative Commons.

Update: The owner of the icons has replied And we can use his wonderful Buf Deuce icons.

Netvibes on the Kludget Engine

Netvibes is a great source for widgets.

I tested several of their widgets. And they look really good on the desktop.

It’s a little tricky to run Netvibes widgets. But learn these steps below and you’ll get tons of shiny widgets.

Download UWA Widget from netvibes.com
Open the UWA Widget or Widget Dashboard Runtime in Kludget Engine.
Click the i button.
Enter the Widget Url. Read about Widget Url below. This is the only tricky part.
Click “Done”. And you’re good to go.

To add another Netvibe widget.

Right click on a running netvibe widget on you desktop.
Select “Create Instance”.
And follow the same steps above.

Widget Url

In their sample RSS widget. They have the following instruction.

Apple Dashboard users: download the UWA widget, install it on your Dashboard, copy/paste the URL of the online UWA widget you want to test (don’t use a local, offline copy), and enjoy.

The URL is actually the link Check the standalone version which points to http://www.netvibes.com/api/uwa/examples/rssreader.html.

To find widgets:

Browse widgets in http://eco.netvibes.com/widgets
Select a widget by clicking it’s link.
Don’t click Add to NetVibes
The Widget URL is the link titled Source
Copy the Link location and paste it in the Widget URL box

Test the Wired Widget now.

Some widgets don’t have the Source link. And I haven’t got them to work yet.

The NetVibe widget framework looks really clean and stable. They have several cool concepts like Universes. I’ll see if these would run on the Kludget Engine.

Beta 0.9.20090518 Released

This release contains the plugin feature. Which would allow widgets using custom plugins to run, provided a Window port of the plugin is available.

This screenshot shows the iStatNano running.

The source code of the iStatNano plugin is also available in the SVN tree.

The requested HotKey features has also been added in this release. But it merely toggles on and off the widget visibility.
